Customers value specialization: rlc I packaging group sharpens Center of Excellence profile

Pharmaceutical packaging sales up 25 percent in first half of 2013 / Investments for the year reach €15 million

Hanover, 02 September 2013 – The rlc | packaging group is investing approximately €15 million in production technology at several plant sites in 2013. As a system supplier for packaging solutions, rlc continues to expand and is tailoring its portfolio to the requirements of clients in the Beauty, Pharmaceutical, Food and Luxury goods sectors. Sales in the first half of 2013 increased by 25 percent at the company's PHARMACENTER in Berlin, and by more than 15 percent at BSC, the rlc subsidiary in Poland. These figures confirm the success of industry specialization. The next step for the family-managed packaging manufacturer is to expand its pharmaceutical division with additional PHARMACENTERS in Switzerland and Russia. The corporate group workforce currently numbers a total of 1,240 employees at eight sites in Germany, Switzerland and Poland.

Sales at the rlc PHARMACENTER in Berlin increased by more than 25 percent compared to the same period last year – a clear indicator of the company's success in the pharmaceutical sector. The company is responding to industry trends toward smaller print runs and higher quality finishing with new equipment, including three Heidelberg printing presses in 0B format with up to eight colors and dual coating. The PHARMACENTER at BSC in Poznan/Poland is also off to a successful start. The company is continuing to strengthen its position in the pharmaceutical packaging market with PHARMACENTERS at the rlc site in Spreitenbach near Zurich and in Russia, where negotiations with a new potential partner resulting from a BSC majority share are already underway.

"We are on the right track with our Centers of Excellence created to meet the needs of pharmaceutical manufacturers," says rlc CEO Hans-Christian Bestehorn. "We are pursuing this strategy in our other target industries and are investing in state-of-the-art technology to expand our sites and their ability to serve specific industries. Our T-shaped philosophy enables us to transfer expertise developed for one sector to other industries served by our companies. This means that an investment benefits our customers in more ways than one."

New premium level manufacturing solutions

Since early July, rlc has been producing exclusive premium packaging with a new Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106-9-LYYLYY-1 at its plant in Aachen, Germany. This operation is highly efficient and environmentally sustainable. The machine is UV equipped and can print up to 18,000 sheets per hour. In-line technology and a downstream printing unit enable complex coatings with fine gradations and matte or glossy finishes. This strengthens the Aachen site's position as a supplier of top-quality premium packaging for consumer goods manufacturers.

Last year, rlc installed a Speedmaster XL 106 eight-color machine with triple coating at the company's plant in Spreitenbach/Switzerland. Used for high-quality packaging solutions produced for customers in the food and luxury goods industries, this system offers a variety of inline finishes, which makes it extremely resource friendly.

Flexo and offset in one machine – even more expertise at BSC

BSC, the rlc subsidiary in Poland, increased sales by more than 15 percent in the first half of 2013. By the end of the year, rlc will be expanding production at this site by adding a new Gallus Flexo-Offset system with twelve printing units and rotary operation. Based on a modular design, the machine combines flexo, offset, gravure and screen printing as needed, particularly for the production of high-quality blanks in a wide range of product variety and finishes. This gives BSC more flexibility in responding to customer needs and enables the plant to print on substrates ranging from paper and cardboard, to PET and PE.
